JOURNAL
My journal is mostly friendslocked. I like to know who's reading; the internets are a big and scary place, and I take comfort in the fact that all and sundry cannot simply wander by and read all about my life. (Of course all and sundry can wander by and read this, but I'm working under the assumption that you're only reading this if you really want to know about me.) I do compulsively friend people who have absolutely no idea who I am, and thus am quite open to people compulsively friending me when I have no idea who they are; just drop me a hello with sane grammar and I'll friend you right back.
I am a lazy commenter. I try to keep my flist small enough to follow everyone's entries sans the use of page filters, but as far as can be told from the way I comment, it looks like I have about six friends total. As a general rule, unless I know you in person or we've been talking online forever, I probably feel a bit weird and stalkery commenting on your journal at all frequently. Don't worry, I still follow your every entry avidly. This may or may not be comforting.
I use my journal to write roughly half-and-half about real life and about fandom, although I aspire to be an academic in a vague pretentious way and thus the lines between real life and fandom are somewhat blurred. These days the real life babble consists of collegiate glee and talk of weird dreams, indie bands, and What I Did This Weekend. Fandom talk is mostly meta about books and TV shows, some fairly ubiquitous and some fairly obscure. I also have a horrible habit of talking about characters from my original writing; feel free to tune out whenever I start in on that.
I've had this journal for five years now. For the love of god, don't go back and read what I wrote in my freshman year of high school.
ARIA
(First: feel free to skip this section. I am self-indulgent and love to talk about myself, but that doesn't necessarily make it interesting.)
I am a writer. That's a terrible thing to say; everyone and their internet dog is a writer. Let's say I love to write. I often do it at the expense of other things (ie sleep, food, &c). I live in a state of perpetual Words; that is, I always have all these thousands of sentence fragments and little images crammed into my mind, and I know no greater satisfaction than sitting down and arranging jumbles of letters on a screen and have them make some sort of sense and meaning and beauty.
I'm a twenty-something Responsible Colleging Adult at a fantastic liberal arts school in Massachusetts with which I'm conducting an ongoing, slightly abusive love affair. Said school is a women's college (which probably means you know which it is within two guesses); my high school was all-girls as well. I half joke that this means I have doomed myself to voluntary lesbianism, although more seriously I will still defend to the death the right of straight girls to attend women's institutions. I myself am bisexual (for your labeling convenience; mostly I am peoplesexual), although to date I've only had girlfriends.
I'm pro-choice, anti death penalty, in favour of gay marriage, boggled by anyone who thinks global warming is a myth, and really, really voting Democrat in November. I probably won't discuss any of that in my journal, but it does inform my thinking. My father is Jewish by birth but not by practice, my mother cycles through permutations of spirtuality, and at the moment they're both seeing how Unitarian Universalism treats them; I believe in beauty, the proper use of long words, fundamental human equality, the possibility of a better future, love, the obligation to be a good person, the essentiality of art, and sometimes six impossible things before breakfast.
FANDOM
In the interest of being helpful and coherent, I here present a (hopefully) complete and handily alphabetized list of fandoms, books, movies, and TV shows I've talked about at one time or another:
A Series of Unfortunate Events, Abhorsen Trilogy, Angel, Babylon 5, Batman, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Dalemark Quartet, Dark Is Rising, Discworld, Doctor Who, Dogsbody, Firefly, Fray, Good Omens, Harry Potter, Heroes, His Dark Materials, Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, Howl's Moving Castle, Iron Man, Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell, Labyrinth, Larklight, Last Unicorn, Les Miserables, Life on Mars, Lion in Winter, Lord of the Rings, Narnia, Pushing Daisies, (writings of) Oscar Wilde, Phantom of the Opera, Pirates of the Caribbean, Rent, Road to El Dorado, (writings of) Shakespeare, Spirited Away, Star Wars, Stargate Atlantis, (writings of) Tamora Pierce, Torchwood, Veronica Mars, War for the Oaks, West Wing, X-Men, and Young Wizards....I promise, this makes me look far more active and engaged in fandom than I actually am. As is, I'm happily past the addicted-to-fanfic phase, although I still enjoy it. When I was thirteen, it was much easier to write in an established universe than to go through all the trouble of making up my own. (Sometimes it still is.) I still love writing fanfic, and for essentially the same reason, namely that it's fun to play around in an established universe. These days I write a bit of fanfic and I read a bit of fanfic, but not obsessively (during the school year; hand me summer vacation and it is often a different story).
I have also been known to RP occasionally. I've variously played Remus Lupin and Sirius Black on
I draw fanart, as well as original stuff, which can be found at my deviantArt. Very much a work in progress. Any artistic talent I possess is used up in writing, but for whatever reason I persist in doodling as well.
I have enough original writing that I will probably never do anything with but like to wave at friends now and again; fic based on various songs, heavily featuring the King family, or too convoluted to actually count as fanfiction is, very selectively, archived at
I also have some fanfic lurking in this journal, but it is buried deep in the previous years. To make this easier for those of you who are wondering where the fic lurks and don't want to trawl through all the old entries, there are a few ways to get at it:
1.
2.
3. Tagged fic: don't you love LJ's tag feature? Every fic I've either posted on or linked from this journal can be found this way. There's no guarentee the links are still working, though.
4. Memoried fic: will essentially give you the same as going through the tagged fic will. It's slightly more organised, though, and possibly more links will be current.
5.
6. If you absolutely can't find something (e.g. Snapdragon and Prongs, which is no longer anywhere on the internets to the best of my knowledge, although people still come asking me for it every now and again) you can always email me (ariastar at gmail) and if I still have it saved on the computer I'll send it over. It probably isn't as good as you remember it being, though.
Anything in any of these sections that I didn't cover? Leave me a comment and I will be disgustingly verbose at you.
